Dentures Plus Grandma = Knowlege

Thoughts of my grandmother arose while I was cleaning one of my patient’s dentures at the clinic today. I remember watching her brushing her dentures in a circular motion with a toothbrush and toothpaste and rinsing them under running water every morning when I was little. They were her most valuable assets that she paid with a great deal of money at that time. She was caring them as best as she knew. Only if I had known what I know now, I could definitely have a better conversion with her about the care of her dentures or a better relationship with her. I would tell her not to sleep with her dentures intact that could cause Candidiasis, Epulis Fissuratum, and/or Denture Papillomatosis in her mouth. I would also tell her not to clean them with toothpaste that could abrade the surfaces. She would have been so proud of me.
Although I am gaining great deal of knowledge each day at the school, I sometimes wonder some things that I learned at the dental material class are actually relevant to dental hygiene profession, I remember what my grandma used to say; there is no such a thing as too much knowledge. I just have to remind myself she is right this time again as she always has been.
